Using an extended UTAUT Model to investigate the adoption of ‘Distant Office’ services in Chlef Province, Algeria

This study investigates the determinants of citizens’ adoption of “Distant Office” (Guichet Distant) services in Chlef Province, Algeria, by extending the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT model) with trust in e-government as an additional explanatory variable. Data were collected through a face-to-face survey of 213 respondents and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results show that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, and trust significantly and positively influence behavioural intention. Facilitating conditions and behavioural intention also significantly predict actual use behaviour. Social influence was found to positively affect performance expectancy, indicating its indirect role in shaping perceived usefulness. In contrast to prior studies, social influence exhibited a significant negative effect on behavioural intention. The findings further confirm that gender, age, and experience moderate several relationships within the model, highlighting heterogeneity among users. Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of trust and interaction effects in explaining e-government adoption in developing country contexts and contributes to extending UTAUT by improving its explanatory relevance for digital public service adoption.
